The company that dyed Harrisville's fiber has closed, so Harrisville is searching for a new dye house. Until they find one and resume production, we can't take backorders for out-of-stock yarn. The colors listed above are the ones that are currently in stock or will be in stock again shortly. If you would like us to contact you when a color not listed above comes in, please email us.
Harrisville's Shetland is a lofty wool yarn with an extensive color line and great heathered colors. It is part of the textile tradition in Harrisville, New Hampshire that began in 1790. Today, Shetland, and its big sister yarn, Highland, are made of a blend of Australian wools, including a Merino Cross, which are dyed-in-the-wool to give brighter color, then blended into shades with depth and variation.
We stock Harrisville Shetland on the cone, which means that the yarn has not had a final wash to remove the spinning oil. The texture will change once the yarn is washed. It "blooms" into a fuller, loftier yarn. If you haven't used this yarn before, it is a good idea to make a small sample first and wash it so you can appreciate the final feel and adjust the sett or gauge if necessary. Shetland also felts well so you can use it for felted hats, bags, and slippers.
