Detailed Description

The crisp patterning of this scarf was inspired by a rug project we did. It is a good example of how a motif can be scaled up or down to suit different yarns and different uses. This scarf uses three colors of one of our favorite yarns, Coast. Two are used in the warp, sett at 20 epi. The third is the weft, beaten at 20 ppi. This is a fairly fine yarn and does require even tensioning to prevent broken warp ends but it is fun to weave and the finished results are rewarding. The kit makes one scarf with finished dimensions of approximately 6.75" x 58". It can be hand washed and air dried.

Coast, from Holst Garn, is a blend of 55% Merino lambswool and 45% cotton. The yarn comes from the manufacturer with a thin film of spinning oil and excess dye on the surface, so it is deceptively fine when you see it on the skein. Once you wash the finished fabric, however, the oil and dye are released and the fiber "blooms" into a fabric that feels like wool flannel. We've tried multiple warps with it with few problems, but if you struggle with broken ends, you might need to put some more practice in before tackling this project.

You will need:

  • 8.25" weaving width
  • 8 harnesses
  • 10-dent reed
  • 163 heddles
  • boat shuttle and bobbin

Our scarf uses Coast in colors Asparagus, Cassis, and Silver Grey. If you would like these colors, simply order the kit above. If you would like to choose a different combination, please see our Coast Skeins page to view the options. Then return to this page, order the kit, and tell us your three color selections in the box above.
