By Susan Kesler-Simpson. If you are familiar with shadow weave as the block weave presented by Marion Powell, this version of shadow weave will look similar but not identical. The twill- or overshot-based threading of Kesler-Simpson's book is more akin to echo weave. Two colors alternate in both the warp and weft. The color and weave effect creates patterning that can be dramatic or subtle, depending on the degree of contrast between the colors. Kesler-Simpson presents the basics of this variation, explaining how any twill or overshot structure can expanded, both in the threading and treadling, to convert it to shadow weave. She goes through the process both for four and eight harness versions, as well as how to add borders and make the design symmetrical. Fifteen projects are given, with color photos of both the finished piece and a close-up of the fabric, so if you don't want to design your own, there are plenty of ideas here to get you weaving.
