The 11" closed bottom end-feed shuttle has the Honex mechanism to control the feed on the yarn. A small Allen wrench, included with the shuttle, is used to tighten or loosen the tension on the weft yarn as it feeds out. This method of tensioning the weft works best with smooth, even-spun yarn that is the size of 3/2 cotton or smaller. The shuttle has a spring-loaded aluminum spindle that accepts a 5" paper pirn (not included). This pirn fits tightly on the spindle and doesn't turn as the yarn feeds out. Instead, the yarn pulls smoothly off of the end of the pirn. There is no spinning bobbin to jerk the weft so many weavers find that using an end-feed shuttle improves their selvedges.
The 11" end-feed shuttle is ideal for medium-width projects like towels, shawls, placemats, and baby blankets. It fits comfortably in your hand and the satiny wood surface is a pleasure to handle. The closed bottom creates a smooth, flat surface on the bottom of the shuttle to help the shuttle slide through the shed.
Bluster Bay shuttles come in a variety of woods. The shuttles are given a shellac finish, waxed, and then buffed, creating a hard, glossy finish. They are produced in limited quantity and the wood types vary with each shipment so if you don't see your dream shuttle today, be sure to check back later.
Dimensions vary, as each shuttle is hand made, but typical measurements are 11.25" long x 1.625" wide x 1.25" tall. The weights vary from 5 to 7.5 ounces, depending on the wood.
