Make a Vest that Fits YOU by Sandy Cahill & Phyllis Carlyle

Nov. 7-8 Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Would you like to make a handwoven garment but are not sure of your sewing and fitting skills? This fast-paced two-day workshop will improve your confidence to cut into and sew your precious handwoven yardage! During the workshop, fiber artist/ production weaver Sandy Cahill will present a clever seaming method and several edge finishing techniques that result in a reversible vest. While learning these techniques, you will make detailed samples in class for future reference. Also, designer/patternmaker Phyllis Carlyle will help you achieve a custom fitted vest pattern that conforms to YOUR body. From her wealth of knowledge, Phyllis will present many sewing and pattern work techniques. Workshop students will receive a 15-page comprehensive handout including handwoven fabric, detailed instructions, gridded pattern material, and a list of resources. Your take-home book will include pockets for the samples you create in the class to be used for future reference.

No refunds/store credit for cancellations after Oct. 23 unless we find a replacement for you.

Class Supply List:

  • Sewing machine with a 3-step zig zag stitch
  • Serger if you have one (two sergers will be provided by instructors for student use)
  • Scissors, rotary cutter & mat, sewing machine needles and power cords, straight pins, tape measure, seam guide, thread, tailor's chalk
  • Mechanical pencil with eraser, note taking paper
  • 2 yards 45" wide commercial fabric that mimics the properties of handwoven fabric (used to make sample vest). You don't want to use anything stretchy or drapey. Commercial fabrics that will mimic properties of handwoven fabrics are considered bottom weight fabrics. These would be fabrics suitable for making suits and pants. Medium denim, lightweight corduroy, tweeds (think Chanel suit), khaki, or chino twills. The fabric choice is not super important as this will be made up into a trial garment, but bonus if your fabric choice makes the vest into a wearable garment!
