Sparkwood isn't a lightweight hat with style but no substance. This hat means business! The chunky cable texture gives extra thickness to the fabric, making pockets to hold warm air. The yarn is wool, so the dense fabric doesn't feel heavy. It is knit from the bottom up in the round, following your choice of written or charted instructions. Two variations are given: the beanie, shown on the aqua hat, and a slightly larger watchcap, with a turned up brim, shown in the light gray. The unstretched circumference measures 15.5" for both versions, which is sized to fit heads of 20-23" in circumference. The beanie is 7.75" long and the watchcap is 8.25" long. Brooklyn Tweed rates the difficulty of this Liz Smith design at 2 out of 5.
Sparkwood uses Brooklyn Tweed's yarn Tones, 3-ply woolen-spun yarn that is lightweight but warm. Tones is dyed in pairs, with each color shown in a light, bright version and a dark, subtle version. It knits at a worsted weight but is at 8.25 stitches per inch in this cable pattern.
