Harrisville's Shetland is a lofty wool yarn with an extensive color line and great heathered colors. It is part of the textile tradition in Harrisville, New Hampshire that began in 1790. Today, Shetland, and its big sister yarn, Highland, are made of a blend of Australian wools, including a Merino Cross, which are dyed in the wool to give brighter color, then blended into shades with depth and variation.
We stock Harrisville Shetland on the cone, which means that the yarn has not had a final wash to remove the spinning oil. The texture will change once the yarn is washed. It "blooms" into a fuller, loftier yarn. If you haven't used this yarn before, it is a good idea to make a small sample first and wash it so you can appreciate the final feel and adjust the sett or gauge if necessary. Shetland also felts well so you can use it for felted hats, bags, and slippers.
