Monk's Belt is a simple form of overshot, with a tabby weft but only two pattern blocks. We used it as the basis of this blanket design, but spiced it up with two pattern weft colors. Harrisville Shetland, a 100% wool sett at 15 epi, is the warp and tabby weft. Harrisville Highland, a heavier weight wool, is used for the two colors of pattern weft. Carrying the weft up the side means that you are juggling three shuttles but don't have to weave tails in after every color change. A floating selvedge on each side keeps the edges neat. Finished measurements are 32" x 58.5" plus fringe.
You will need:
- 36" weaving width
- 4 harnesses
- 10 or 15 dent reed with usable length of 36.2"
- 540 heddles
- 3 shuttles
- 3 bobbins
We have chosen Shetland color Jade for the warp and tabby weft and Highland colors Cypress and Teak for the pattern weft. If you would like these colors, simply order the kit above. If you would like to choose your own colors, order the kit and then note the warp color and two pattern weft colors you want in the box above. Please click here to see the colors. (The same colors are available in both the Shetland and Highland.)
