We teach classes in rigid heddle weaving at our store, and this runner is one of the projects that we have used. It is a pattern called log cabin, in which two colors alternate in both the warp and weft, creating blocks of stripes running vertically or horizontally. Because it is plain weave, it is perfect for rigid heddle. It generates an interesting pattern through color-and-weave effect, without the use of a pick up stick. Instructions are also provided for threading a 2 or 4 harness loom for this project.
We have used the wool yarn Highland from Harrisville (made in New Hampshire!) in a medium and dark blue. We deliberately chose colors of only medium contrast in order to give a subtle look to the blocks. If you would like a more dramatic contrast, pick a light and a dark combination.
We have chosen Cobalt and Midnight Blue for our runner.
