This knitting class is suitable for knitters who have been actively knitting and would like to expand their technical skills. If you know how to knit, but it has been a few years since you picked up needles and yarn, please take the Introduction to Knitting class first.

Introduction to Fair Isle Knitting

June 15 Sunday 1:30-3:30 p.m. 1 day

Fair Isle knitting, also known as stranded knitting, allows you to work 2 colors within a row. This technique is often accompanied by 2-handed knitting, so you'll also learn how to knit Continental style and English style at the same time. By Mary Mortensen.

Supplies to bring, all of which are available at the Yarn Barn:

  • Pattern supplied during class.
  • 50 yards each of 2 different colors in worsted weight yarn. Wool is traditionally used in Fair Isle knitting. Please bring solid shades only.
  • 16" circular US 7 or 8
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors

Please complete the homework before class:

HOMEWORK: With one of your chosen yarns, cast on 78 stitches, join in the round. Work 4 rounds of Garter Stitch (knit 1 round, purl 1 round, knit 1 round, purl 1 round). Leave stitches on needle.

PARKING: The parking garage is located at 927 New Hampshire Street. Top level parking is free. Level 2 parking is $2.00 to park 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Street level and basement level parking is limited to 2 hours. Pay stations are located at each stairwell on the street level. Sunday parking is free downtown.
