Detailed Description

Color-and-weave effect is a fun way to get a dynamic pattern with a fairly simple threading and treadling sequence. The color change does all the work! In this project, three colors are used. The warp is sett at 20 ends per inch and threaded in pairs of adjacent heddles. The weft is a simple repeat of four treadles. However, the placement of the color is critical so it keeps the project interesting. The finished measurements are approximately 8" x 62" plus fringe. The scarf can be hand washed and dried flat. It can also be machine washed using a lingerie bag to preserve the fringe.

Coast, from Holst Garn, is a blend of 55% Merino lambswool and 45% cotton. The yarn comes from the manufacturer with a thin film of spinning oil and excess dye on the surface, so it is deceptively fine when you see it on the skein. Once you wash the finished fabric, however, the oil and dye are released and the fiber "blooms" into a fabric that feels like wool flannel. This is a fairly fine yarn and does require even tensioning to prevent broken warp ends. We've tried multiple warps with it with few problems, but if you struggle with broken ends, you might need to put some more practice in before tackling this project.

You will need:

  • Coast: 2 skeins of main color; 1 skein each of two accent colors
  • 10" weaving width
  • 4 harnesses
  • 10-dent reed
  • 194 heddles
  • boat shuttle and 3 bobbins

Our scarf was woven using main color Carnation with secondary colors of Jay and Lime.
