SPINNING GUEST INSTRUCTOR

We are excited to host Heavenly Bresser, an award-winning handspinner and international fiber arts instructor.  Heavenly has many years of teaching experience, including a wide range of handspinning courses through various organizations and fiber events such as the SOAR retreat, Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival, Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival, Vogue Knitting Live and Stitches Events.  Some of her areas of passion include the love for working with color and working from fleece.  Heavenly has made it her mission to help fiber artists of all levels to expand their knowledge about their craft and to try new things.  We will present 4 classes that should help inspire you and grow your skills in handspinning.  These are not beginning spinning classes and you should be able to spin yarn independently.

In Carding for Loft, learn how to use hand cards properly to create rolags and understand the difference between rolags made on hand cards and those made on blending boards.  We’ll learn the differences between a true woolen yarn and a semi-woolen yarn and how to properly characterize the yarns you spin.  We will navigate through common issues for spinning long draw techniques and learn how to avoid them.  Materials and equipment not included.

This leads perfectly into the second half of the day with Slow to Quick: Easte Your Way into Long Draw  where you will learn its great benefits for handspinning.  Lofty, warm, and airy yarns are produced by use of the long draw method.  Take the mystery out of the technique and learn how to properly set up your spinning wheel for supported and unsupported long draw, how to choose the best prep for practicing and achieving the results you want and learn how these techniques can be used for other spinning equipment.  Materials and equipment not included.

Join us on Day 2 for Think Outside the Braid as we explore different ways to spin combed-top braids, including gradient spinning, combination drafting, and spinning multiple braids together into one yarn.  We will use both color theory and creativity for the best results.  Gain confidence in spinning braids with varying colors into a cohesive yarn.  This is a drop spindle friendly class!  You will get a fiber bundle for this class, but other materials are not included.

We will round out the  workshop with Fractal Spinning with Dye Top & Batts.  Take your fractal spinning knowledge to new heights as you learn how to create (and spin) unique 2-ply and 3-ply fractals with dyed top and batts.  Heavenly will discuss practical ways to use color theory when choosing dyed tops and why it is important to consider.  You will learn how various dye methods influence the outcome of the fractal.  Heavenly will demonstrate spinning techniques for creating these yarns including a new way to spin across the top and tips for maximizing color control while spinning from the fold.  Join us for a fresh approach to fractal spinning and let’s create those self-striping yarns you really want.  You will get a fiber bundle for this class, but other materials are not included.
