As a rule, the lighter the loom, the more challenging it is to use for rug weaving. However, we found that it is possible to make a lightweight rug using carpet warp and 75/6 Mop Cotton on a rigid heddle loom. The warp is striped in three colors of double-stranded 8/4 Carpet Warp, sett at 10 doubled ends per inch. The weft is almost entirely fast-weaving mop cotton, with a border of carpet warp. It is just plain weave, but between the colorful stripes and the hard-wearing materials, this rug is a winner. The pattern includes instructions for weaving this rug on either a rigid heddle loom or a loom with harnesses. You are free to pick any three colors for your warp, but keep in mind that the natural color of the mop cotton shows at the edge of the rug, so using a light color for the edge warp stripe will hide this while a dark color will accentuate it.
