Detailed Description

NOTE: The weaving class listed below is designed for those who have woven tapestry techniques before or have taken our Introduction to Tapestry Weaving class.

TRANSPARENT TAPESTRIES

Oct. 26-27 (Sat.-Sun.) 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 2 days

In this class, we will be creating designs on plain weave fabric using inlaid supplemental wefts. This technique is a bit faster than traditional tapestry and creates a lightweight ground cloth with individual forms woven within.  Use up your oddments and have fun with color!  We recommend that you bring your own loom, but you may also rent one from us.  If you are bringing your own loom to class, let us know in the box the type and size loom you are bringing.  By Bea Bonanno.

CLASS SUPPLY LIST/THREADING INSTRUCTIONS:

  • You may bring a rigid heddle loom or harness loom (table or floor) with a 12-dent or 12.5-dent heddle or reed.  It must be fully assembled and in good working condition.  If you are bringing a tapestry loom, then it needs to be able to accomodate either a 10- or 12-epi yarn sett.
  • Sign up HERE to register for a loom rental and pre-threading ($30) or let us know which type and size loom you are bringing in the box.
  • Warp yarn: 8/4 cotton or similar yarn gauge.
  • Primary weft yarn should be 8/4 cotton or similar gauge yarn as warp.
  • Supplemental weft yarns can be anything you want to use.  Get wild and bring lots of different colors, textures, and art yarns.  A great way to use up your stash.
  • Tapestry Beater
  • Shuttles (boat shuttles and bobbins or stick shuttles)
  • Scissors

Warping Instructions: Using the 8/4 carpet warp, measure a 1 yard warp of 96 ends.  On a rigid heddle loom, sley 1 thread per slot and hole on a 12- or 12.5-dent heddle.  On a harness loom, sley 1 thread per dent on a 12-dent reed.  Tie onto the back beam and wind warp with heavy paper or corregated cardboard.  Tie and tension at the front.

PARKING: The parking garage is located at 927 New Hampshire Street.  Top level parking is free.  Level 2 parking is $2.00 to park 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  Street level and basement level parking is limited to 2-hours.  Pay stations are located at each stairwell on the street level.  Sunday parking is free downtown.
