Bluster Bay shuttles are beautifully finished with a satiny surface and a shape that fits well in the hand. The 10" bullnose shuttle is a good all-purpose shuttle, with some heft without being too weighty. This is an open bottom shuttle so it has a little less weight than the closed bottom version. It takes a 4" bobbin (not included). Bluster Bay recommends the Schacht bobbin.
Bluster Bay shuttles are made by hand, one at a time. The wood is shaped, sanded, and sealed with clear shellac. Once the shellac has dried, it is buffed with steel wool, waxed, and buffed again. This is a time-consuming process but one that creates a tool that is a pleasure to use. When you consider how many times you throw a shuttle in a single project, you realize how important it is to have a well-made tool.
The woods available vary throughout the year but the following are commonly stocked:
- American black cherry--moderately hard and relatively lightweight, with fairly subtle grain lines and a fine texture. It begins as a tan or reddish brown and darkens as it ages.
- Ash--North American hardwood that is generally tan but can have darker mottling and black streaks. It is a mid-weight wood with a somewhat coarse grain but it can be polished to a fine luster.
- Maple--North American mid-weight wood with a fine texture. It has a creamy white color and a straight grain with occasional swirls and waves. It can be polished to a high gloss.
- Black walnut--North American hardwood with a dark, rich brown color with a grain that is generally straight but can have occasional ripples and curls. It has a hard, smooth finish.
We occasionally receive a variety of more exotic woods. Those are posted on our website as we have them.
No two Bluster Bay shuttles are identical but here are common measurements:
Dimensions: 10" long; 1 3/4" deep; 1 1/4" high
Weight: 4 1/2 oz - 5 3/4 oz
