Marte is that indespensible piece that works as a top layer over a shirt or a middle layer without bulky sleeves under a jacket. It echos the traditional gansey with cables on the top and stockinette on the bottom but includes refined techniques like sloped bind-off at the shoulder and i-cord edging at the armholes. It is knit in two pieces, from the bottom up, and seamed. Stitches are picked up and worked in rib for the double-layer collar. The cable design is worked following a large chart. Marte is designed to fit loosely, worn with 6-8" of ease. Finished chest measurements are 34 (40, 46, 52, 58)" with finshed lengths of 23.25 (24, 25.5, 26.25, 27.75)". The vest can be hand washed and dried flat. Brooklyn Tweed has assigned this Julie Hoover design a skill level rating of 4 out of 5 (adventurous intermediate).
Marte was designed to be knit in Loft, Brooklyn Tweed's fingering weight yarn spun from US-produced Columbia-Targhee wool. It is a woolen-spun yarn, with lots of tiny air pockets that make it lightweight but warm. It has a soft hand and slight fuzzy halo after wet blocking. For Marte, Loft is knit at 5.75 stitches per inch in stockinette.
