If you have been looking for your next mindless knitting project, this is it. The majority of the shawl is made by repeating a single row. But what a result! The simple design shows off your favorite colors and the garter stitch structure makes the fabric supple and springy. The shawl is made of five identical triangles that are entirely garter stitch. They are sewn together and then live stitches on the perimeter are transfered to a long circular needle and the border is worked in garter stitch. The stitches are bound off using the stretchy Icelandic Bind Off, which is a handy technique to have in your tool kit. The shawl measures 82" across the longer edge, 56" along the shorter edge, and 15" deep. It can be hand washed and dried flat. Brooklyn Tweed has assigned this Gudrun Johnston design a skill level rating of 2 out of 5 (adventurous beginner).
Auna uses Brooklyn Tweed's Vale, a lace weight Rambouillet wool produced entirely within the US. Vale has a springy feel and a smooth surface that compliments the simplicity of this shawl. It is laceweight but is knit quite loosely here at 5.5 stitches per inch in garter stitch, after blocking.
The kit includes the pattern and yarn. For this project you will also need:
- 24" circular needles in US size 6 (OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE)
If you adjusted the size above to get gauge, adjust the needles below correspondingly.
- 40" circular needle in US size 6 (same size as above)
- stitch markers, including a unique one for beginning of round
- waste yarn for holding stitches
- T-pins for blocking
- blocking wires (optional)
- tapestry needle
Auna is shown in Vale main color 591 Norway with contrast colors of 540 Parchment and 524 Arabesque. If you would like your shawl to be in this color combination, simply order the kit above. If you would like to pick your own colors, see our Vale page to view the options. Then return to this page, order the kit, and tell us your three color choices in the box above. Please specify which is the main color.
