Woven Optical Illusions: Pattern and Design from Four to 24 Shafts
by Stacey Harvey-Brown and Katharina Kronig
Taking a page from Op Art techniques that use placement of black, white, and color to create movement, the illusion of three-dimensionality, distortion, and phantom shapes, Harvey-Brown and Kronig transfer those effects to the world of textiles. Familiar structures such as Atwater-Bronson lace, shadow weave, doubleweave, advancing twill, and taqueté are used to create these optical illusions. Most effects are shown using drafts with eight or more harnesses but some four-harness drafts are given for shadow weave and other color-and-weave effects.
The book is organized by visual effect, Diagrams, drafts, and photos of woven fabrics illustrate how to create it as a weaving. There is also scientific background given for why each illusion tricks our brain. In addition, a gallery presents the work of textile artists from all over the world who are implementing these techniques to create amazing pieces.
