This acrylic yarn looks similar to perle cotton: sleek and shiny. It is stain resistant and the fringe resists fraying, so it is a good choice for placemats, baby blankets, or other items that may require frequent washing. It is not absorbent, however, so not a good choice for napkins or dishtowels. The 8/2 orlon is the same size as 8/2 cotton, so it can be substituted in projects calling for 8/2 cotton. One caution: If you use a jack loom, limit your projects with the orlon to 4 or fewer harnesses. The orlon can stretch on the back harnesses, leading to uneven tension.
