This is the kind of cardigan that you will wear often and for many years because it never goes out of style. It also makes it clear to anyone who sees you that you know your knitting! Three different cable patterns are used, evoking the ripples in the Kaw, the river that runs through Lawrence, just north of Yarn Barn. The cable repeats are worked following a combinaiton of charted and written out instructions. The body is worked flat in one piece from the bottom ribbing to the armholes. The shoulders are shaped using German short rows and joined with a 3-needle bindoff. Stitches are picked up at the armholes and worked in the round down to the cuffs. Stitches are picked up for the front bands and neck, using short rows to shape the shawl collar. The pocket linings are knit separately and then sewn into place. The finished chest measurements are 39.5 (42.5, 45.75, 49, 55.5, 59.75)" with lengths of 23.5 (24, 24.5, 25, 25.5, 26)". The sweater can be hand washed and dried flat.
The Kaw Valley Cardi was created by Kansas City-area designer Cheryl Murray as a salute to the beautiful Kaw Valley, where the Yarn Barn is located. The sweater was designed using Harrisville's Highland, a 100% wool yarn spun in New Hampshire. Highland is a heavy-weight worsted or Aran weight yarn and is knit at 4.5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch for this project.
