Overshot seems like the perfect structure for a Christmas runner. It is traditional and even the newest piece looks like it could have been handed down for several generations. This runner uses a pattern called "Sun, Moon, and Stars" for the center panel and then gives it a border on either side with simple stripes. It takes 8 harnesses to weave the version as shown, but the pattern includes instructions for a 4-harness version with a slightly different border. Two weights of perle cotton are used: 10/2 for the warp (sett at 24 epi) and tabby weft and 5/2 for the pattern weft. With overshot, you use two shuttles but the results are worth the extra effort. The kit makes one table runner of approximately 14.5" wide and up to about 68" plus fringe. The runner photographed is 35" long. It can be hand washed and dried flat.
