Overshot seems like the perfect structure for a Christmas runner. It is traditional and even the newest piece looks like it could have been handed down for several generations. This runner uses a pattern called "Sun, Moon, and Stars" for the center panel and then gives it a border on either side with simple stripes. It takes 8 harnesses to weave the version as shown, but the pattern includes instructions for a 4-harness version with a slightly different border. Two weights of perle cotton are used: 10/2 for the warp (sett at 24 epi) and tabby weft and 5/2 for the pattern weft. With overshot, you use two shuttles but the results are worth the extra effort. The kit makes one table runner of approximately 14.5" wide and up to about 68" plus fringe. The runner photographed is 35" long. It can be hand washed and dried flat.
You will need:
- 16.25" weaving width
- 8 harnesses for version shown, or 4 harnesses for the adapted version
- 12 dent reed
- 385 heddles
- 2 boat shuttles and bobbins
- optional fringe twister for fringe
We have chosen 10/2 perle cotton in 136 Wintergreen for the warp and tabby color, and 32 Lipstick for the 5/2 perle pattern weft in our runner. If you would like these colors, simply order the kit above. If you would like to choose your own colors of perle, order the kit and then note the colors you want in the box above.
