Detailed Description

If you want to create areas of woven color side-by side but don't have a lot of harnesses, then clasped weft weaving is the solution. In this technique, borrowed from tapestry weaving, the two colors come from the edges, twist together in the middle of the shed, and then return to their selvedges. You end up with a doubled thickness of each yarn and the color changes midway through the shed. We used this technique in a four-color rug. The warp is 8/4 Carpet Warp sett at 6 epi and the same yarn is used for a plain-weave hem at each edge. The weft is the 100% wool Rug Wool. The finished dimensions are 24" x 42" with hemmed edge. The rug can be hand washed and air dried.

You will need:

  • 1 tube 8/4 carpet warp
  • Rug Wool: 3 skeins each of colors A and B; 2 skeins color C; 1 skein color D
  • 26" weaving width
  • 4 harnesses
  • 12 dent reed
  • 156 heddles
  • 1 boat shuttle and bobbin
  • 1 flat, rug, or ski shuttle
  • tapestry needle

Our rug uses 8/4 Carpet Warp in 13 Black for the warp and hem. The Rug Wool main colors are 161 Black and 156 Medium Teal. The secondary color is 300 Lime Green with 106 Deep Coral as the accent.
