In shallow boat shuttles like the Swedish-style shuttles, paper quills are used in place of plastic or wood bobbins. The quills have a smaller shaft than most bobbins so standard bobbin winders will not work. The Swedish quill winder is used for paper quills.

The 3.5" paper quills are used in the Bluster Bay 10" Swedish shuttle. The 5.3" paper quills are used in the Bluster Bay 12" or longer Swedish shuttle.
