Bluster Bay shuttles are beautifully finished with a satiny surface and a shape that fits well in the hand. The 13" bullnose end feed shuttle is Bluster Bay's mid-size end feed shuttle. Unlike a traditional shuttle, an end-feed shuttle uses a pirn that is held without spinning on the spindle. The yarn unwinds off of the end of a pirn, just like pulling yarn off the top of a cone. This shuttle uses a series of hooks to provide tension on the yarn. The more hooks that are wrapped, the higher the tension. There is no wrench needed to adjust the tension and this mechanism works well for thick-and-thin yarns as well as evenly-spun ones. This is an open bottom shuttle so it has a little less weight than the closed bottom version. It takes the 5.5" pirn (not included).
Bluster Bay shuttles are made by hand, one at a time. The wood is shaped, sanded, and sealed with clear shellac. Once the shellac has dried, it is buffed with steel wool, waxed, and buffed again. This is a time-consuming process but one that creates a tool that is a pleasure to use. When you consider how many times you throw a shuttle in a single project, you realize how important it is to have a well-made tool.
The woods available vary throughout the year but the following are commonly stocked:
- American black cherry--moderately hard and relatively lightweight, with fairly subtle grain lines and a fine texture. It begins as a tan or reddish brown and darkens as it ages.
- Ash--North American hardwood that is generally tan but can have darker mottling and black streaks. It is a mid-weight wood with a somewhat coarse grain but it can be polished to a fine luster.
- Maple--North American mid-weight wood with a fine texture. It has a creamy white color and a straight grain with occasional swirls and waves. It can be polished to a high gloss.
- Black walnut--North American hardwood with a dark, rich brown color with a grain that is generally straight but can have occasional ripples and curls. It has a hard, smooth finish.
No two Bluster Bay shuttles are identical but here are common measurements:
Dimensions: 13" long; 1 3/4" wide; 1 3/8" high
Weight: 6 3/4 oz - 8 oz
