Feltmaking is one of the oldest textile traditions. In Anatolia, felt is still produced for making saddlecloths, rugs, and hangings. This program features the wool market, the felting bow, laying fleece for felting with a forked tool, patterning, kicking the wool, feltmaking machines, and the making of arakiye (bowl-style hat), kepenek (shepherd’s cloak) and sikke (dervish hat). See how a tubular piece of felt is made for the cloak. Detailed patterns are placed on the rugs and the coats by laying in dyed pieces of fleece. Filmed in Turkey, this documentary captures the real life practice of felting for everyday use. 54 minutes.
