The Ikats of Sumba: Tie-Dyeing and Weaving of Ceremonial Cloths DVD |
|
Sumba is a region in Indonesia where crafters still produce superb ikats. Ikats are made by tie-dyeing the warp and the weft yarns prior to weaving. This complex ikat cloth uses blue dye from indigo and a red dye from a tree root to produce ceremonial clothing in designs that are detailed with traditional motifs. All local materials are used in the fabric production. Video footage includes spinning, tying, dyeing, weaving, designing, and adding supplementary warp edgings. As you will see, the entire village participates in this amazing hand craft. 57 minutes.
