The Paddock Shawl is a classic half pi shawl, following Elizabeth Zimmermann's method of increasing the stitches. The shawl starts at the upper center point and increases outward, following several easy-to-read charts for the lace pattern. The stitches are bound off using the stretchy Icelandic Bind Off. The shawl measures 54" across the top and 27" to the lower curve. It can be hand washed and dried flat. Brooklyn Tweed has assigned this Gudrun Johnston design a skill level rating of 3 out of 5.
Redshift uses Brooklyn Tweed's fingering weight wool called Loft. Loft is a woolen-spun wool that has a soft, fuzzy texture after wet blocking and makes a warm shawl that is lightweight for its volume.
The kit includes the pattern and yarn. For this project you will also need:
- 40" circular needles in US size 5 (OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE)
If you adjusted the size above to get gauge, adjust the needles below correspondingly.
- 16" circular needle in US size 5 (same size as above)
- spare needle in US size 8 or larger (three or more sizes larger than above)
- stitch markers
- T-pins for blocking
- blocking wires (optional)
- tapestry needle
The Paddock Shawl is shown in Loft color 136 Bale. If you would like your shawl to be in this color, simply order the kit above. If you would like to pick your own color, see our Loft page to view the options. Then return to this page, order the kit, and tell us your color choice in the box above.
Like the design but prefer a finer weight of yarn? This same design is available as a kit using Vale, Brooklyn Tweed's lace weight yarn.
