Making of a Kilim: Spinning, Dyeing, and Weaving in Anatolia DVD |
|
Kilims (slit tapestry rugs) have been woven in Turkey for thousands of years. In the villages of Anatolia, the tradition survives with women weaving the traditional motifs using local wools for spinning, natural dyes for coloring, and traditional upright tapestry looms for weaving. Once completed, the rugs are finished with singeing and intense washing to remove excess wool fuzz and brighten the colors. The motifs used have been handed down over the years with some individual interpretations put in by the weaver. This program attempts to show how these amazing tapestries have been woven over the years by showing today's weavers, dyers, spinners, and traders.
