Kid's Scarf, Glove, and Head Band Set in Encore DK
Outfit your favorite youngster in a matching set of winter accessories! The pattern is written for DK weight yarn, so we've kitted it in Plymouth's machine washable acrylic/wool blend, Encore DK. The gloves and head band come in two sizes, for ages 4-7 years and 8-12 years. The scarf is one-size-fits-all, with finished measurements of 6" x 32.5". The gloves are knit in the round on double point needles. They are worked from the cuff down using ribbing and stockinette stitch. Stitches are put on hold for the thumb and fingers while the rest of the hand is completed, then the live stitches for the thumb and fingers are picked up and finished. The tips of each finger are worked in a contrasting color. The scarf is begun with a multi-color cast-on, then worked combining Irish moss stitch in the main color with garter stitch accent colors on each end. The edge is finished with a pom-pom in each color. The head band has a ribbed edge and then the same garter-stitch accent as the scarf. It is knit flat then seamed and topped with a trio of pom-poms.
We like Encore DK for this project because it has bright, lively colors that kids love. However, for your more sophisticated color connesseur, it also has darker and more muted colors. Made of 75% acrylic and 25% superwash wool, Encore DK is machine washable and dryable but with a little nicer hand than many 100% acrylic yarns.
