Christmas in Kansas StockingOur own Beth Dearinger designed this pattern for a modern Christmas stocking that combines flecked Donegal Tweed with variegated Boku using the Fair Isle technique. It is knit from the top down in the round, starting with the two-color ribbing. The leg is knit using charted motifs for the garland, stars, and diamonds. The heel flap is worked using the same two-color ribbing used at the top. The heel is turned and the snowflake motif is worked on the foot. A series of decreases completes the toe. Flat, the stocking measures approximately 19" from cuff to heel and 7" across the leg, but will, of course, stretch to accommodate the bounty of treats for Santa's favorites.
The modern color combination is achieved by mixing Tahki's Donegal Tweed, a 100% wool yarn with flecks of contrast colors, with Plymouth's Boku, a 95% wool/5% silk yarn that is both variegated and tweeded. The effect in Beth's color combination is subtle, but intriguing. You can make the pattern more pronounced by picking colors with even higher contrast.
