These wintry mittens feature a bird perched on a branch that wraps around to the palm of the mitten. The mittens are worked from the cuff up in the round, using a 2-color corrugated rib pattern at the cuff. The body is knit in fair isle following a chart for the color placement. The thumb is worked when the body is complete, using stitches that had been reserved on a holder. The finished mittens measure 8" around the palm and 8" from fingertip to wrist, with a 3" cuff. Designed by Alexa Ludeman.
We're making kits of this project using Brown Sheep Company's Nature Spun Sport. Brown Sheep is just across the border from us in Nebraska and they use environmentally friendly processes to dye their yarn. Nature Spun Sport is a 100% wool yarn that comes in lots of colors. So if the brown-natural-black combination doesn't speak to you, there are dozens of other colors to consider. The mittens can be hand washed and dried flat.
The kit includes the pattern and the yarn. For this project you will also need:
- double pointed needles in US size 4 (OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE)
- stitch marker
- stitch holder or waste yarn
- tapestry needle
Our kit comes with Nature Spun Sport colors 89 Roast Coffee, 601 Cracked Pepper, and 730 Natural. If you would like to use these colors, simply order the kit above. If you would like to pick your own colors, see our Nature Spun Sport page to view the options. Then return to this page, order the kit, and tell us your color choices in the box above. Please specify which is the main color (dark brown in the model shown).
